Cristobal Balenciaga was born in 1885 in Guetaria, Spain. His mother was a dressmaker, and he learned his inital skills from her, he was known to make excellent dresses even at a very young age. In 1897 he became an apprentice tailor. In 1898, at the age of only 13, he met the Marquesa de Casa Torres and she granted him access to her wardrobe. Balenciaga was asked to make a dress for the Marquesa. In 1902 he went to Bordeaux to learn French as Balenciaga believed that this was required for his career.

In 1913 at age 19 Balenciaga began working for Calle de Harnani, a gown maker. In 1919 Balenciaga opened his own salon in San Sebastian, and then a second and a third in 1933 in Madrid. In 1937 Balenciaga relocated to Paris due to the Spanish Civil war. Balenciaga had a large amount of experience in design by this point, but the French had not heard of him. Balenciaga's designs were welcomed as new, and he regarded as a new icon. His dresses were so well made that he was known as "The Master". Balenciaga continued to be influential up until 1957. In 1968 he retired, and only made one more dress for the Duqesa Cadiz 1972 - he died the same year at age 87.
